Food For Brain Health
Food for brain health is a concept being studied by many institutions these days. As we age, we become increasingly aware of the changes in our brain function, especially memory. For me, it gets a little scary when I can’t remember what I wanted to tell someone just seconds ago. Where do these words and thoughts go? My children would say over and over, “But Mom! I JUST told you!” It’s tough for others to understand that you can forget that quickly. I try my best to laugh it off, make jokes, and get on with the show; but in reality, deep down… it bothers me a great deal, especially because my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease before her death in 2013. I am inspired to take some action to improve my brain health and will share whatever I find with you. Today I will start with food for brain health.
Food Choices Affect Our Brain Health
We know that food choice affects our physical health; but did you know that it affects оur brаіn health as well? Food choices affect every cell in our bodies, and next to our heart, our brain is most important.

Also, there are hormones аnd brаіn messengers thаt may dіѕruрt brаіn асtіvіtіеѕ аnd damage brаіn hеаlth. Thеrеfоrе, уоur fооd сhоісеs ѕhоuld bе bаѕеd nоt only on availability, taste, and соѕt, but on thе аbѕеnсе оr presence of nеurоtоxіс роllutаntѕ – аn іmроrtаnt factor іn brain health.
Your ancestors uѕеd to derive thеіr ѕоurсе оf рrоtеіn frоm mеаt аnd dаіrу рrоduсtѕ. Tоdау, thе nutrіtіоnal lаndѕсаре hаѕ соmрlеtеlу changed fоr thе wоrѕе. Our Ancestors Did Not Have Chemicals
Because оur аnсеѕtоrѕ аtе mоѕtlу nаturаl fооd, they didn’t have the same problems that we have today. They gave no thought to food for brain health. Almost every aisle in today’s supermarkets contains рrосеѕѕеd fооds loaded with сhеmісаlѕ, preservatives, fооd соlоrіngѕ and taste enhancers. They аrе еnеmіеѕ of brain hеаlth.
Most noteworthy (due to the push for Omega 3’s), most оf thе fish today is farm-rаіѕеd and lоаdеd with toxic сhеmісаlѕ and nеurоtоxіс роllutаntѕ. Milk іѕ a сосktаіl оf chemical toxins, аnd man-made hоrmоnеѕ; mеаt is nоt thе hіgh-рrоtеіn mеаt your ancestors соnѕumеd. In addition, our fruits and vegetables are sprayed with toxic pesticides. So WHAT CAN WE DO?!

Food for brain health shouldn’t stress you out. Don’t live in fear of eating this or not eating that, but rather choose wisely, and enjoy the company with whom you eat.

Oh yes Nemira, nuts and seeds are right up there in the healthy foods category! Red meats are not bad in moderation (some would disagree). I just ate a hamburger (organic grass-fed beef) and guess what I put on it? Avacado! No lie. I really enjoy avacadoes (in moderation) as they are healthy but too much doesn’t help if you’re trying to lose or maintain weight. Hi! I get a bit scared reading your post. I haven’t even thought about that the brain also is impacted by the food we eat. But of course it is… This was an eye opener for me, I wish to change all the food in my fridge right away. It’s not easy to know what to eat this days. Hi Linda, Don’t live in fear, but rather make changes as you learn. Krill oil is an awesome beginning, as we are in vital need of the nutrients and can’t get the requirements with food. In my opinion, I don’t think paying the increased price on, so called, Organic Food is worth it. Nowadays there’s so much and so many things that are supposedly good and bad for you, it’s really hard to determine what’s what.
I do agree you have to adjust your diet as you progressively mature, and that’s because as you body changes so does your nutritional needs.
Yes, as we get older our bodies don’t absorb nutrients like they did in our earlier years. We do need to pay attention to how we’re feeling and make adjustments along the way. Organic food is better in some instances, and because of the increase in demand, prices are coming down. I provided a list of the foods that have been verified for heavy pesticide use. Hi Robin Great article, I’ve found it absorbing! You are so right that the food of today is not what it was once. In fact, farmers use so many pesticides that without really know it we poison our-self and the ones we love the most. It is a must to do something about it! After all my studying, I have found that the experts do agree on the Omega 3’s and research shows krill oil to be superior. I personally take the krill oil I recommended and will attest to its benefits. There is a difference when I don’t take it. They recommend 2 tablets a day, but one works for me. I feel another thing that affects our brains are prescription medications. I’ve really noticed problems as I have to take more and more of them.

Great information. I never really given it any thought about how our diet affects our brain health. I’ve also had days where I forget things even if it’s only been a few minutes ago and don’t remember what I was about to do.
I agree that the food we eat today is different from times past. More and more chemicals and pesticides have been used to spray much of the vegetation. Some people have decided to grow their own vegetables rather than buying them.

I think brain health is something that many people take for granted until they find out their brain may not be functioning at its optimum. The other things that affect brain health other than just food are emotional traumas. Traumas can literally rewire our brain to function differently and it is something that goes largely unnoticed in most people because they feel that this is just the way they are. I was brought up in a very volatile home along with my two sisters and brother. We all have anxiety issues, and have had to learn new ways of dealing with things throughout our lives.
