There are few things as unnerving as experiencing the serious memory lapses that come with age. While young people may be forgetful, needing to retrace their steps to jog their memory isn’t necessary. It’s a totally different story for those advancing in age. The best brain health supplements becomes a topic we search for. We begin to experience the possibility or threat of losing our memory forever. It’s only natural to yearn for a supplement that will help to prevent mental decline.
There are a wide variety of supplements on the market that claim to improve the memory, from fish oils, to cocktails of herbs, and more. Many of them have no validity in their claims. However, we can provide you with information on a few legitimate supplements that can improve your brain health.
Fish Oil (Krill Oil is Considered Superior)
Experts have sung the praises of fish oil as a brain food for quite a while; and the omega 3 fatty acids are beneficial to your brain function. Of course, if you’re a big eater of fatty fishes (like salmon, trout, and anchovies), you have a great start. Early studies indicate that those who consume more fatty fish score better on memory tests. The issue is that the majority of people don’t eat enough fatty fish to make a difference. Like I said, studies confirm that krill oil is superior to fish oil. According to WebMD, a study showed that taking fish (krill) oil supplements doubled the reduction in mistakes on tests measuring memory and learning.
My recommendation for krill oil is Omega Icon by Jaylab Pro. The video you see explains all the benefits of krill oil. Jayson Hunter is the gentleman doing the video, and you can read his story >>>here<<< Just click on ‘See Product Video’ when you are taken to the page.
Vitamins
While vitamins play an important role in a variety of health issues, there is only one that plays a part in the prevention of mental decline… Vitamin B12. According to the Mayo Clinic, a vitamin B12 deficiency results in memory loss. This is a particular risk for vegetarians and vegans. Studies also indicate that a lack of vitamin B12 can increase the risk of dementia.
Gingko Biloba
Gingko Biloba has become a favorite on the US market for preventing memory loss. While there have been plenty of studies on the product, the results are inconsistent. According to WebMD, using gingko biloba won’t prevent the onset of dementia; however, it can improve the memory of those already suffering from the disease.
Huperzine A
Huperzine A is derived from Chinese moss, a supplement that works to boost brain chemicals in the same way prescription drugs do. Researchers are optimistic about its effects on memory for dementia patients. You can review products >>>HERE<<<
Vinpocetine
Vinpocetine has been approved in Europe as a dementia treatment, but in the US, it is sold as a supplement. It’s the synthetic version of an extract from periwinkle. It is one of the best brain health supplements. Find Vinpocetine >>>HERE<<<
DMAE
Dimethylaminoethanol is related, chemically, to choline. While studies are scarce, early indications suggest that this may be effective in assisting with memory. As a result, you can find DMAE in many multi-supplements.
Some Things to Consider
Memory is complex and it can be affected by experience, education, genetics, emotions, and physiological changes. There are many factors which can contribute to memory loss as we age. But please know, there are many factors which can contribute to keeping our memories in tact.
Some types of dementia are reversible, and are related to other health problems. If you find yourself growing forgetful, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re suffering from dementia. Although we can lose some memory as we age, we can take preventative measures to keep it strong. If you are experiencing memory loss and are worried, you should make an apt. with your doctor to run tests.
In Conclusion
There are many ways to keep your brain healthy such as physical exercise, strong social ties, a healthy diet, and exercising your brain with new games every day. These practices are most important. If you find yourself lacking in any area, please do what you can to resolve it. I have had to pay attention to social interactions, as I have a tendency to seclude. So there you have it ladies… 6 of the best brain health supplements. Most importantly, do not think all memory loss is inevitable and…
Robin, I really like your site! As a woman over 50 it has a lot of great information in fact I signed up to get updates :-). I will be checking in to the supplements that you listed on your post. I have already heard about fish oil but have never tried it. I take supplements for my joints which seems to really help my knees and I also take a multivitamin for women over 50 but not sure how that is really working. My concern is taking so many supplements that is why I haven’t tried the fish oil.… Read more »
Eating right is one of the most important things for our well-being. As we age, we cannot get or absorb a lot of the vitamins we need from our food, and that is why supplements are important. My article on the best women’s multi explains some of this. I would definitely recommend krill oil above all supplements. I’m not sure about your aunt, but I do know that so many vitamins are just not necessary. Thank you so much Donna for stopping by and signing up!
So I not yet in my 50’s and already experiencing memory loss. I fear the onset of Alzheimers.
Thank you for a quick review of supplements, but keeping it real. The community you build is just as important as your healthy diet. What do you think about collagen? Thanks again for the info.
What a beautiful logo you have! Please don’t fear. It is best to do the good things that have been proven to deter the onset. I mentioned some here, and in the article https://womenover50thrive.com/… We need to educate ourselves and take action on the things we are able to or willing to. I have not studied collagen so I won’t comment on that right now. Maybe in a future article! Blessings to you and thanks for stopping by!
Thank you very much for this post! My mother is going to be over 50 in a few years time, and her health is definitely on the decline. She worries for us to much to care for herself, and as her children, we want to care for her too.
You suggested 6 types of supplements. Do you mean that it is best to take all of them together? Or only choose one (or a few) of them? If so, how do I know which is best suited for my mother?
Hi Rachel, It gives me great joy that you are looking out for your mom in this way. I miss mine so much. I am sending you a link to a supplement that has a few of the vitamins I mentioned, and is highly rated by a good number of people on Amazon. Hope this helps! Blessings, Robin
